Stumbling Through the Internet

Stumbling Through the Internet

Everyone knows the basic social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. However, there is one site in particular that will surprise you. StumbleUpon is a site where users can select their own interests and “stumble” into content that relates to them.

Initially, the site is a bit confusing, but once you start “stumbling,” it is very difficult to not stumble. Users get drawn in because the content is so relevant to their interests. The experience becomes more and more personalized as users “like” and “dislike” content pages. As they do, the content becomes more specific to your wants and needs. This means no more annoying posts that we don’t have any interest in seeing! Yay!

You’ll feel like you’ve time traveled. One minute you are just browsing to see what the site is all about, and the next it’s an hour later and you’re asking yourself, where did the time go?

Because of StumbleUpon’s ability to track the specific interests of its users, it is becoming a great place for marketers. They can use the site to zero in on very specific target audiences based on values and interests rather than just demographics alone. For example, if a healthy food product wants to target women between the ages of 20-30 who are interested in paleo diet, running and dogs, they can directly reach out using the StumbleUpon database.

StumbleUpon has the option for users to follow other users as well. This increases the likelihood that other users will see your messages because they are following someone who “liked” one of your posts.

After writing this post, I have become addicted to the site myself. I enjoy it because the content covers topics that I actually am interested in reading and it is quick and easy to use. If you don’t believe me, go try it out yourself!
