See Me Live On Periscope Or Meerkat, Say What?

See Me Live On Periscope Or Meerkat, Say What?

If you’re wondering what the draw is to Periscope and Meerkat, you’re not alone. In a time when everyone is too busy to sit down and eat a meal together, when will you have time to watch a live broadcast on Twitter, even if streaming it to your smart phone is an option? We set our DVR’s to record our favorite shows. Then again, if your household is anything like mine, someone is surfing their phone or tablet while watching TV. So checking your Twitter feed while kind of tuning into your favorite rerun is pretty common. Oh, something sparkly! What was I saying?

I first noticed Periscope when Jim Gaffigan was constantly tweeting, “Catch me live on #Periscope in a few minutes.” My problem is I could never catch it because I don’t check my Twitter feed enough. Well now Periscope has finally (after many complaints) released playback within 24 hours, so you still have to be on the ball somewhat. The video quality isn’t always great but it could have some use for other things.

As said by dozens of sites, businesses could use Periscope for live webinars, host interviews, and show behind-the-scenes action like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson did when he hosted SNL in late March 2015. It can also be used for responding to PR disasters, connecting with journalists, announcing a new product, and driving traffic to your live events. It is good for live Q&A sessions because you can get answers in real time. But who is actually using Periscope?

I wanted to know if companies were actually doing what hundreds of articles and blog posts have said can be good for their businesses, so I started monitoring. Sky News in the United Kingdom is doing a great behind-the-scenes campaign. Being an election pre-year, presidential hopefuls are using Meerkat pretty steadily to get their message platforms out. (In an effort to remain bipartisan, said candidates shall remain nameless.) Mayo was really kicking it up a notch pushing their seminars and webinars with Periscope. For the most part thusfar, news organizations and celebrities are driving this ship.

It’s pretty early in the game to tell if platforms like Periscope and Meerkat will break out or bust, but it’s worth giving a try and at least expanding your own horizons. Who knows…you might even like it!
