Mentoring the Next Generation of Innovative Engineers and Scientists

Mentoring the Next Generation of Innovative Engineers and Scientists

Many of us at Axiom teach at the collegiate and professional level, as well as mentor high school students in science and technology, including programs such as FIRST.

robotcreative1FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization comprised of high school-level teams competing head-to-head on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built and programmed. Under strict rules, limited resources, and the guidance of volunteer mentors including engineers, teachers, business professionals, parents, alumni and more, teams of 25+ students have just six weeks to build and program robots to perform challenging tasks against a field of competitors. They must also fundraise, design team “brands,” develop teamwork skills and perform community outreach. In addition to learning valuable STEM and life skills, participants are eligible for college scholarships, too.

This is where innovation and creativity skills are perfected, cultivated and demonstrated: in a competitive, yet sharing environment.

FIRST is all about innovation and creativity. It continually amazes me how many novel ideas are put into action by so many talented teams of students. I’d urge you to go to a competition and see for yourself!

With sponsor organizations like NASA, as well as prominent inventors like Dean Kaman, First students are affiliated with notable organizations and individuals that contribute to their creative and innovative ingenuity. Their creativity extends far beyond robot design and creation, into logo development, team videos, fundraising and the many tactics robotcreative2used in competition.

Over 95% of these high school students continue their higher education in the field of engineering or other sciences to help shape the future of technology and society. Many of today’s engineering students at the college level got their start in FIRST

FIRST is a great venue for technology and innovation for student and mentor alike. Get involved in your local teams today.
