It’s Time – Go Buy the Fun Stuff

After a year of chasing down toilet paper, the elusive N95 masks and hand sanitizer (abbreviated by my friend, Nancy as han-san), isn’t it time to buy the fun stuff?

In a recent post for Northwestern University’s Kellogg Insights, Adjunct Lecturer Paul Earle says, “the year ahead holds a lot of promise for companies looking to innovate—thanks to a confluence of new needs, new habits, and a sense of relief and openness.”

Buy the Fun Stuff

He goes on to cite that retailers sticking to staples will miss out on the pent-up urge for novelty and fun. Companies that suspended or delayed product development may miss the swell of spending beyond the basics. Expect consumers to look toward fun products and a growing sense curiosity and magnetism toward innovation. In short, if you’re holding out for the right time to launch a novel new product, now is that time.

Kindness Prevails

The article goes on to predict a trend toward kindness. Theres no doubt we view things differently now. That gathering you may have previously dreaded? Many now see these opportunities to come together as a privilege, even an honor. The need to express empathy toward others runs deep, including loved ones, strangers, animals and the environment. Products that capitalize and enable these connections in fun ways will prevail. This may be especially true as society adjusts to the new normalcy of workplace dynamics. As a hybrid of remote work and in-the-office becomes normal, that cat on the keyboard or doorbell interruption isn’t such a big deal.
